Oh yes, most definately. This is my theory, and one that fits most asuredly. Cross was never hiding from the BRO, even tho it openly appeared that way. I believe this was a very elaborate rouse, as well as his other bad habbits. I believe Cross had no other diciples because he was chosen to hunt down and find Allen because they knew more then they were letting on. Like any human government, I believe the BRO is very tricky, and very secretive. The last few chapters surrounding Kanda backs up this assumption. Cross isn't dead, no way in hell!
I believe that quite possibly, Cross's death was an elaborate hoax by enacted by the Vatican itself. Cross has been their darkest ally, they're most efficient information source. I believehe has been following orders all the while, yet noone in the BRO is knowledgable of this. Think of the timing of this incident, the way he handled the past situations, the way he always disapeared. What about the fact that he didn't have any diciples accept Allen who has some very special traits about him? Cross is much more then he is made out to be. What about the turning of Akuma? Hmm? He can control them, and turn them to the side of good. Seems odd only he has so far been able to do this. Right down to the fact that he is rarely in uniform, and that he he has been allowed to hold a corpse captive so that he may use the innocence. If so, that proves right there that there is a way to maintain sync between a body and its innocence without the user's soul. That must also mean that there is a way to remove sync with an innocence and its partner. Afterall, he was an equipment type user. This connection would be easier to break I believe. If there is a way to artificially create a connection, then there is most definately a way to break one.
If Cross were able to pull off this sort of rouse, then he would need alot more resources then he himself could muster. This would mean that he would need either the help of the Vatican, or the Noah. I sincerely doubt that the Noah would be in league with him, he has been far too much of a thorn in their sides, and I'm sure the wound was getting rather sore. This could be another reason why he needed to fake his death.
It could also be very possible that he faked his own death completely of his own design because of Allen. He did care very much for Allen, I believe that Cross is a very loving, and sensitive character, we just don't see him EVER let his guard down. I think his relationship with Allen proves this. However, I don't think Allen killed him, but rather Cross had been given orders to kill Allen if he ended up on the other side. Quite possibly, he had left the BRO without word to anyone outside of the Vatican itself, thus the rouse.
By any means, I don't believe that he's dead. If he is, then we will see him again. This is far to intriguing a plot twist for it to be left out. Especially considering what we have seen so far
and the emphasis put on his disapearance.
