D.Gray-Man has had some pacing issues in my mind, and I've found myself wondering many times "Why is the author doing it this way? It's so confusing!" - but lately the character depth and mysteries are piquing my interest, for sure.
I have a couple of things I'd like to say that are puzzling me.
1) General Cross.
He always seems to know things, kind of like the Urahara of the D.Gray-Man world, lol.
It has felt like the things he did were with a purpose... Firstly, he kept Allen at a distance but yet when the time came, he believed in Allen a lot. Cross knew that Allen was the musician who could move the Ark, and even that Allen saw the 14th in the mirror. I just have to wonder how on earth he had such knowledge.
So when the knock came on his door, he waited there - which isn't like him to be sitting alone in his room when there were cute woman around, at least in my opinion. And when the knocks continued, he pulled out his gun in preparation.
And when his attacker came in, gun to his head, he smiled... There was one bead of sweat on his face, but he didn't really seem that scared.
Cross had mentioned he wanted to talk to Allen, but I have to wonder why he did it in front of Levellier/Louverier (however you spell his name). With his abilities, he could've easily slipped away and talked to Allen alone. The higher-ups had already doubted Allen's loyalty, and Cross' information about him being the 14th furthered their distrust of him - so what was he trying to do? Perhaps he willingly gave up his innocence somehow?
2) Innocence.
It's been bothering me for a while, but Innocence isn't exactly pure and innocent at all! I mean, it's supposed to be given to special apostles appointed by God, right? But they have little choice in deciding if they wanna becoming an exorcist or not.
In the case of Suman: Yes, he betrayed his comrades, but here is where things get odd: Instead of his innocence just destroying him or removing its power from him, the innocence goes nuts. He turns into a Fallen One, and while that form allowed him to destroy a ton of demons, its sole purpose seemed to be making him suffer... and in the process, a village was destroyed.
Now why on earth would a holy power which seems to be able to think on its own at times unload its power and take out innocent humans, the ones the holy power is supposed to exist to protect?
Apoch, Mr. Grim Reaper (to the Noahs), mentioned he didn't want Levellier "to know yet", so he obviously knew that guy. What was he trying to hide from him? Also, he told Allen he'd become "a beautiful exorcist" - so for some reason he had been watching Allen, but didn't make a move on him earlier before Allen was guarded after the Ark incident.
His methods were... questionable, to say the least. He could've easily gotten in there due his Cardinal status/form, and talked to Allen and explained what was going on, that he was Innocence given form (and proved it), then said he'd merge with Allen to have him become more powerful, etc. But no, instead he spied, then hurt the guards and went to try to merge with Allen by force.
Also, he came in when Allen sort of fainted, after thinking he wanted to ask the 14th what he was after. Apoch said not to let him sleep, and I think he was just trying to prevent him from asking the 14th anything.
The Noahs hated the 14th, he betrayed them. His preventative measures allowed Allen and the other exorcists to live, and to gain control of their own Ark, which really made the Earl visibly angry - a real show of his emotions.
This has me wondering: then why did the Earl say he wanted to be beside the 14th, and why would the Noahs protect Allen from the Grim Reaper man? They even witnessed him say he wanted to consume Allen and that it'd prevent the 14th from awakening - exactly what we'd think the Noahs would want - but yet they protected anyways. Sure, they might have to one day fight the heart, but at least the 14th would be gone.
The final piece of this is Tim: Tim knew of Road's attempt to harm Allen, and what Tyki did to Allen... and yet, at the end of Chapter 204, he carries both Allen & Road and attempts to save them. Tyki grabs Tim and Tim doesn't seem to resist or show negative emotions: this seems like an interesting tidbit.
Makes me think the "third side" of the war has to do with a fight against both the demons and the innocence or the maker/controller of the innocence. Because Noah was a favored person in the Bible, he was given the chance to survive while the world was purged: Why, then, did one of the Noahs contain his rage? That's one of the last things you'd think he'd have had.
I also found it odd that the Level 4 demons/akuma look like angels. I feel that this has an importance significance, somehow.
Long reply, I know. This just has me thinking a lot, lol.
Edit: I'm really interested in learning Japanese and just started, so if anyone has any advice, please let me know! I'm also a novice graphic designer, and if anyone here has anything to teach, I'd love that as well.
