I was having fun reading your little argument (between shinobitokobot and fourteenth) but shinobitokobot and kannagi are correct :)

uuh not to just jump in but in the manga when alma (the akuma) died kanda saw 2 souls didn't he? so weren't alma and his (kanda's) lover 2 diff people? (i mean in the past life) so going along with that alma probably wasnt kanda's lover, just his friend. i might be wrong tho XP dont kill me for being wrong!! T.T
Love is a illusion, it will only break your heart to believe in such things
and i was curious about the spider here at chap 200 page 8 (OOT? but i'm curious XD)
"Having a light side... and a dark side... is what makes life interesting."
Alma and kanda's lover are still the same person. I think what happened when kanda saw both of them was that he saw a soul and a... conscience (not sure what else to call it). I think it's basically like whenever krory sees eliade. Eliade is just a personality, not a soul, but krory could still see her after she was killed ( like when he fought jasdebi), while Allen saw the soul of that akuma with his eye(who wasn't Eliade). Eliade was the personality of an akuma, but there was a soul in that akuma, so that means that eliade and that soul are technically the same person, even though they have different lives, but you can still see two different people (like with alma and kanda's lover)... does that make sense?
Err...for the time being I'll just ignore the "they're both guys so they can't be lovers" statement, and move on to the canonical facts.
About 40-50 years prior to the current time of DGM, Kanda and Alma's original selves were killed in battle. They were both exorcists. Kanda's previous self was male, and Alma's previous self was female, and they were both lovers.
Their bodies were stored in the Asian Headquarters for 30 years before they were used for the Second Exorcist Project.
Now, I'll just say it now, but I don't know this part 100%, but I'm pretty sure the experiment was transplanting their brains into new, artificial bodies specifically made for combat with Akuma.
After the transplant, some time passed before Alma, then Kanda, woke up, both in male bodies. (Note: I would hate it if I was born a girl and then transplanted into a male body. Just saying. o.o") Then..well..we all [theoretically] read the Kanda arc, so...yeah...
So even though their bodies are artificial, I'm pretty much half expecting to see some sort of Kanda/Alma lovechild appear sometime in the series just because..well, it's Hoshino. She seems to be telling us that she can and will do whatever.
/late.
